Emotional pain is an inescapable part of life, but it doesn’t have to be the boss of your life.
I’m Dr. Chris Chiros, a clinical psychologist with over 20 years of experience helping people navigate emotional pain and life’s complexities. After a deeply meaningful career serving veterans and their caregivers within the Veterans Health Administration, I’m excited to be in private practice here in South Minneapolis!
This is the part where I’m supposed to list a bunch of special expertise and skills (and I do have those; don’t worry), however, I recognize that our lives are often much more complicated than any summarized list I might give. I am extremely comfortable helping navigate the layers of complexity that we have as individuals, as well as being psychologically flexible when challenges arise– all in the service of building a life that is meaningful. I balance giving space to tell your story with strengthening skills to move your life forward.
My clinical approach is grounded in Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), helping clients identify what truly matters to them and take meaningful steps in those directions—even when life is hard. I also draw from Compassion-Focused Therapy, and mindfulness-based strategies.
I work with adults of all ages, presenting with a wide range of problems including: anxiety, depression, life-transitions, aging, adjusting to complex medical conditions, and stress (including caregiver stress). I have particular expertise in treating sleep disorders, including insomnia, traumatic nightmares, and health psychology (particularly coping with chronic medical problems and caregiver stress).
Clients often describe me as warm, supportive, “real”, and direct. I want to help you identify a goal and aid you in moving toward that, whether we get you where you want to be in a handful of sessions or settle in to do some longer term work. I take the work I do very seriously, while simultaneously trying not to take myself too seriously.
I’m proud to be seen as an ally by many of my LGBTQ+ clients, and I recognize that being an ally is not something I get to declare; it’s something I consistently strive to earn through trust and respect.
I offer both in-person and virtual sessions. I would be happy to connect with you for a free consultation to see if I am a good fit for your needs. For more information, or to request an appointment or free consultation, please visit my website.
